Demo: Water Lily

Point of View

Water lilies, floating on still water… Often viewed from above, these peaceful blooms offer high color contrast to their deep green leaves. Today, we explore their side view, observing how petals unfold, shadows fall, water reflects.

shapes to Explore:

  • Bloom — half-circle; flat bottom
  • Petal shape — long, narrow oval
  • Petal tip — pointed
  • Leaf shape — very large round, with notch
  • Leaf texture — radiating veins; shine

things to Notice:

  • Bloom position — floating (sometimes atop leaf)
  • Petals — “unfold” from vertical at center to horizontal at side
  • Bloom center — shorter than petals; usually yellow
  • Leaf number — typically 25 (or more) per flower
  • Leaf position — horizontal (sometimes under the bloom)
